METROTENERIFE

Description of the company:

Metropolitano de Tenerife, S.A. (Metrotenerife) was set up in 2001 with the aim of creating a transport alternative in the form of trams so as to alleviate the congestion on the island of Tenerife.

It is currently a solid company which is self-sufficient and centred on its customers since the income it obtains from the operation of its two tram lines covers all its costs of operation and maintenance.

Metrotenerife is a member of the, Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP), and being its managing director the vice president of the Committee of Light Meters, and belongs to the Latin American Association of Metro and Subways (Alamys) and the Association of Collective Urban Transport Management Companies (ATUC).

Oriented towards the market, the company has grown and expanded with the same initial idea, the search for innovative and effective solutions in public transport. The projection and building of a range of transport facilities; the analysis and design of new projects etc., give the company integral autonomy and the capacity to export the knowledge it has acquired in the conduct of its own business activity.

The social commitment and the public service vocation of Metrotenerife has earned it a number of signs of recognition in the course of its existence, including:

  • Best environmental and Sustainability Initiative – Global Light Rail Awards 2018.

  • Vision of the year – Global Light Rail Awards 2018.

Some of the innovative solutions that have been developed are:

  • System for Monitoring of On-Board Speed (SIMOVE):

This is an innovative system which makes it possible to continuously supervise in real time the speed of the vehicle and the driving behaviour on each stretch, comparing the position with the proper speed at that exact point on the line.

If SIMOVE detects excess speed, it immediately alerts the driver and if the driver does not correct the situation and continues at too high a speed or goes beyond the established limit it automatically applies the emergency brake, thus preventing human errors from causing situations of risk and accidents

SIMOVE has a back office application capable of storing all the recordings which arise during driving and carrying out an analysis thereof making itself a valuable tool for railway operators, permitting the supervision of the operation and the study in detail ofthe events arising, among other aspects.

Areas of activity:

  • Technical assistance in the planning, design, operation and maintenance of railway infrastructures.
